Alternative to 1Password

KeePassXC is an open-source password manager that runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. It stores usernames, passwords, URLs, attachments, and notes in an offline, encrypted file (KeePass-compatible KDBX format) that can be kept in any location, including cloud storage of your choice.

  • Local encrypted database — KDBX format (KeePass-compatible with KDBX3/KDBX4); all information is encrypted at rest and never exposed outside the program
  • Import from 1Password and Bitwarden — supports importing databases from 1Password, Bitwarden, Proton Pass, CSV, and KeePass1 formats
  • Browser integration — works with Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Chromium, Vivaldi, Brave, and Tor Browser, with passkey support
  • TOTP storage and generation — plus YubiKey/OnlyKey challenge-response support
  • Auto-Type — types passwords into applications automatically
  • Database reports — password health, HIBP breach checks, and statistics
  • CLI and integrations — keepassxc-cli, SSH Agent integration, and FreeDesktop.org Secret Service

Written in C++ (GPL-2/GPL-3). Best for people who want to self-manage passwords in a local encrypted file without depending on cloud services. Getting started is easy with pre-compiled binaries from the official downloads page, and no server setup is required. Unlike server-based options such as Vaultwarden or Passbolt, KeePassXC is standalone; syncing across devices means placing and syncing the encrypted file yourself.
